Atlantic WoodWORKS! has joined our EPP Program as a new Provider

Their first course topic – Sustainability Webinar: Building the Future for Wood and Mass Timber – has just been approved and uploaded to our EPP distance learning site.

When: DEC 8, 2021 FREE – ONLINE WEBINAR – 1 HOUR

Register in advance for this webinar: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_9x_XWHiKRcab9YrkiJvlJg

The webinar supports only 100 attendees at a time. The record of the webinar will be available.

Presentation Abstract:

Globally, many regulatory and policy initiatives are proving advantageous to wood.  In addition, there are the systemic changes occurring in the building sector. These include: densification, urbanization, technology (design, BIM, energy and building modelling, wood and resin manufacturing and processing), energy and carbon performance, life cycle analysis and productivity concerns affecting the construction trades globally. Other expectations for buildings include healthy and biophilic design, designing for deconstruction and the circular economy and affordability.

While not all of these are regulatory, they are considerations that the building sector deals with every day and, for the most part, there are solutions offered by increasing the amount of wood used.

Some details about the speaker:

Peter studied Marine Biology, Zoology and Forestry the University of British Columbia and has used that science-based foundation as a technical communications specialist to advance a better understanding of wood products and the forest sector. He has more than 30 years experience dealing with regulatory, environmental, sustainability and operational issues.

He is National Sustainability Manager for the Canadian Wood Council (CWC), a technical and knowledge transfer organization, which provides free technical support to designers, contractors, building and fire officials, owners and regulators to build a strong wood culture in Canada through education, training and awareness.  In this role, he is developing a training and accreditation programme for heavy, mass and prefabricated wood component installation for trades and general contractors.

He regularly presents on achieving greater sustainability, durability and the appropriate use of wood in Asia, Europe and throughout North America to design professionals, contractors, educators, regulators and building officials.

He is a regular participant and session facilitator with the UN Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry as well as a market reviewer specializing in wood and the green economy for the Forest Products Annual Market Review published by the UNECE Forestry and Timber section.

He is a member of the Low Carbon-Assets through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA^2) Initiative of the National Research Council of Canada.

On behalf of the NLAA Public Outreach Committee, we are delighted to share our next HOUSE lecture featuring NLAA Architect, Robert Mellin.

In his lecture titled “Learning from Vernacular Architecture”, Robert will share his experience of recently building a house for his family in Granada, Nicaragua, and how his studies of vernacular architecture in India and Newfoundland influenced the design. Although the situation in Nicaragua was quite different from Newfoundland’s design and construction context, he will discuss similarities in the way architects think about culture, site, materials, light, the use of space, and sustainability.

A Cast Iron Star is Born – 19th Century Masonry Wall Ties

1.0 LU/HSW

Tuesday, March 2 | 12 – 1:00 p.m. EST

A Cast Iron Star is Born reviews late 19th and early 20th Century masonry structural wall ties, which are often found in antique stores as cast iron stars. Structurally significant cast iron stars are often overlooked as interesting architectural features and consequently do not get replaced when missing during building renovations. Learn about the historic and current building code requirements for the wall tie systems along with historically sensitive mitigation considerations when redeveloping historic brick buildings.

Masonry Movement Joints: Structural Edition

1.0 LU/HSW

Wednesday, March 10 | 1- 2:00 p.m. EST

Learn about the movement characteristics of structural masonry wall systems. We’ll compare the differences between movement joints in architectural veneer and in structural reinforced masonry. There are many types of masonry movement joints and strategies. After this session, you’ll be able to identify best practices for detailing movement joints to accommodate and/or restrict masonry material movement.

Historic Mortar Replication & Pointing

1.0 LU/HSW

Tuesday, March 16 | 12 – 1:00 p.m. EST

Get an overview of historic mortars, components, profiles, and purposes to help you develop appropriate replication and pointing mortars for historic masonry projects. We’ll discuss both historical cementitious binders and modern materials. All too often, new pointing mortars that are denser and stronger than the original mortar leads to moisture entrapment and damage to original masonry materials. In this session, we’ll focus on the lime cycle, differences between non-hydraulic and hydraulic binders, and how they affect mortar properties. You’ll gain an understanding of the methodology for assessing existing mortars and developing appropriate replication mortar mixes. Laboratory mortar analysis can be complex. We’ll break down elements of testing that are practical and helpful for mortar replication. In addition to understanding the original mortar, how to analyze it, and how to use this information to replicate mortars, a successful project also requires knowledge of how mortar is installed. We’ll explain mortar removal and installation techniques and provide quality control recommendations. You’ll also see demonstration videos from knowledgeable masonry restoration craftworkers who illustrate best practices.

Design and Detailing of Reinforced Hollow Clay Masonry

1.0 LU/HSW

Thursday, March 25| 12 – 1:00 p.m. EST

sign and Detailing of Reinforced Hollow Clay Masonry presentation explains the brick making process, including specialty shapes and the associated physical properties of fired clay materials. These properties require different detailing than concrete masonry, which is explained and described, followed by examples of its durability related to projects which provide resistance to thermal gradients, wind pressure, blast, and seismic forces. Economic uses are shown along with other unique applications and uses.

Invitation from Anne Swan, Dalhousie University re Robert H. Winters lecture series Resistance as Practice: Acts of Anti-Racism through Architecture and Planning

We are happy to invite you to the inaugural Robert H. Winters lecture series Resistance as Practice: Acts of Anti-Racism through Architecture and Planning!

The event is hosted by the Dalhousie University Faculty of Architecture and Planning’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, in partnership with the SHIFT: Connect conference. Our next event will be on Wednesday, January 27th at 7pm AST, and will be a lecture by Dr. Mindy Fullilove. Fullilove is a social psychiatrist and professor of Urban Policy and Health at the New School, who explores the relationship between the environment and public health. She has made important contributions to urban planning through her scholarship on racial inequalities in the built environment, and has authored critically acclaimed books including Urban Alchemy: Restoring Joy in America’s Sorted-Out Cities, and recently, Main Street: How a City’s Heart Connects Us All.  Please see the attached announcement for more details on the panelists and the event, and register through Eventbright here.

The series will extend into March of 2021, and feature architects, planners, scholars and activists whose work focuses on anti-racism on scales local to Halifax, in other Canadian contexts, and internationally. Speakers and panelists for the remaining events will include Vernelle Noel, Frank Palermo, Jennifer Llewelyn, and Ingrid Waldron.

We are organizing this event at a critical moment for architects, planners and other disciplines grappling with difficult histories and professional cultures. This means questioning how designed spaces are embedded with power structures that stratify our society, and how practitioners are implicated in this. Just as importantly, we must acknowledge that this is not a new conversation or area of analysis: racialized communities have developed their own planning and design practices in cities when they have not been heard by the faces of power. This lecture series builds on the ongoing powerful response to racialized violence by presenting the work of practitioners, academics and activists who have pursued these acts of anti-racism as a central focus of their work.

We hope that you’ll join us, and stay tuned for information on events in the rest of the series!
